PROMENADE

Created by Laura K. Nicoll for Portland Dance Month

Featuring: Janoah Bailin, Kyle Sandberg, Michelle Tsiakaros, Kerry Anderson, Heather Flor Cron

As part of the First Friday Art Walk

Begins at 5pm at the pier at Casco Bay Ferry Terminal. Ends at 7pm at the offices of Creative Portland, followed by the Promenade Dancer Rendezvous to kick off Portland Dance Month 2019.

An ensemble of performers journey across Portland during First Friday Art Walk. Their movement is an improvised response to the built and natural environment. The project is an invitation to fellow pedestrians to reflect on and celebrate a moving human body, and the dances that are all around us, in public space.

As you watch, you are welcome to participate in whatever way feels natural to you. If you document the performance, please share on social media and use #PortlandDanceMonth or tag @PortlandDanceMonth so that we can enjoy and share your photos and video. All that we ask is that you are respectful of your surroundings and the people there with you.

Maine State Ballet: Firebird & Paquita

FIREBIRD & PAQUITA

Maine State Ballet presents two classics, The Firebird and Paquita, at their home theater in Falmouth.

Set to the haunting Stravinsky score, The Firebird tells the story of Prince Ivan’s quest to free Princess Elena from the grasp of the evil sorcerer, Kostchei. Along the way he encounters and catches a dazzling, magical bird, the Firebird. To be set free, she gives him a feather and tells him to call on her if he needs help. As Ivan is caught by Kotschei’s and doomed to destruction, he summons the beautiful Firebird to his aid.

Paquita is a classical Spanish-flavored divertissement set to familiar music by Minkus. This light-hearted collection of ballet variations showcases Marius Petipa’s choreography in fine style.

Sara Juli’s mission is to explore her own personal struggles through the medium of performance. In sharing her work, she is hopeful that others will understand an aspect of her personal turmoil, and be able to relate it to their own. Her introspective autobiographical solo performance fuses movement, text, song, voice, gesture and audience participation to both acknowledge the gravity of her burdens as well as to simultaneously laugh at their reality. Declared “…a light of the downtown dance and theatre scene” by The New Yorker, Juli lives and works in Maine where she is the Founder/Director of Surala Consulting.

Juli has also been creating and performing innovative performance work since 2000. She has been fortunate to tour around the country and world performing her work in venues such as American Dance Festival, Bates Dance Festival, Performance Space 122 (NYC), New York Live Arts, Dance Complex (Boston), Napa Valley Opera House, Artown Reno, 3S Artspace (Portsmouth), SPACE Gallery, TEDxdirigo and many more. Internationally she has performed in The Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, London, Russia and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. Sara has been a recipient of a Maine Fellowhip for the Performing Arts awarded by the Maine Arts Commission, and a New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Dance Project Touring grant.
